When I started CASA, I thought things wouldn’t get bad enough for the majority of people to truly start to take action until 2030. My saying was, ‘it will take that long until everyone’s hair is on fire’. That the impact of climate change will be undeniable and we will have begun to see significant human migration and financial impact. Of course, by then, it will be too late and opportunities to be proactive in securing land or major lifestyle changes to improve your families chances to weather the potential chaos will be a lot harder.
Well, what we are seeing today is undeniable evidence that heat events (last week’s heat dome in the Pacific Northwest), Southwest mega drought, first announced hurricane on its way to Florida, breaking up of the Antarctic ice shelf, accelerated melting of Greenland, etc… is happening way faster than the scientific models predicted. This is bad news because we have lost a lot of time despite the new Administration’s efforts to re-ignite and focus on reduction of carbon emissions. I would suggest that what I thought might be happening in 2030, now looks likely in 2025/26.
Almost everyone I talk to understands and knows challenges are coming but they are just too busy to do anything about it other than use a little less plastic, start considering an electric as their next vehicle and maybe eat a little less beef. All good things but would suggest starting to plan for what happens if things go sideways. A little planning might save a lot of grief later on.
