With all the news around COP26 and focus on the Poles and island nations submerging, we miss the places where climate change is chipping away at key resources and threatening millions. One example is Peru, who depends on rapidly shrinking glaciers for its water supply. Peru is a desert but has survived on the slow seasonal melting cycle of its very high glaciers that are then replenished during the cold winter months. But with climate change, they are melting at a rapid rate and will be gone in another decade or two, leaving the population of millions with no water. (see attached link to video from Sky News)
So here is the problem; in many places in the World, it is already too late, even at 1.1 deg C rise where we are today. This melting of the glaciers is not going to stop and will only accelerate causing millions to be displaced. It is similar for reasons of drought in Central America which America is now experiencing at its southern border from displaced people. This is only going to get worse, even if we stop emissions today.
Like a broken record, we are already in serious trouble. It is going to get worse and unless we focus on eliminating GHGs it will more than likely become catastrophic.
