Bill Gates 60 Minutes Interview

Bill Gates was interviewed on 60 Minutes this week and I would recommend everyone watch on this link: https://www.cbsnews.com/video/bill-gates-climate-change-60-minutes-2021-02-14/

Basically, he validated everything I have been saying about how big a problem we are facing and how challenging it will be to get everyone on board to make the changes needed to deal with climate change.  Of course, Bill is very politically correct about staying optimistic and as I have noted on the CASA home page, I also believe humanity will rise to the challenge but perhaps not until things get really bad.  He states that climate change is a much, much bigger problem than the current pandemic and notes that refugees from the Syrian civil war are just a teaser for the climate refugees that are coming, so if you go back and read my blogs, we are very aligned on many issues.

Bill is also a huge believer in a technology silver bullet and perhaps this is where we disagree somewhat.  Not that I don’t think we might come up with something that will save humanity and many of the other creatures we share the planet with, but I wouldn’t bet on it.  We have what we need today to deal with climate change and just lack the political will to get going as the very lives of our children and grandchildren depend upon it.  (ok, so do you Gen Z’s!!)

One of his beliefs is that nuclear power should play a big part, and I agree with him, but also (and he says this, too) think deploying new versions of reactors will be very difficult since it takes a long time (20 yrs) to build such a power plant and the NIMBY (not in my back yard!!) effect will be really hard to overcome.

So, depending on how much you want to bet on someone else taking care of this looming catastrophe, you might want to consider preparing for the big challenges ahead and hopefully CASA can help.
