The Good News: (Biden pledges to reduce US emissions by 52% by 2030)
President Biden’s new pledge to slash America’s greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decade is long on ambition and short on specifics, but experts say that success would require rapid and sweeping changes to virtually every corner of the nation’s economy, transforming the way Americans drive to work, heat their homes and operate their factories.
The Bad News: (this is going to be really hard)
CNN’s Bill Weir says this goal is going to be like JFK’s challenge to go to the moon in the 60’s, plus win a World War, plus end hunger, racism and bring World peace, all at once. In other words, really hard to do! (BTW, don’t ask the Republicans for support.)
Also, remember, on the way, GHG’s PPM levels will continue to rise from 418 PPM CO2 today (the last time the earth was at this level was 3 million yrs ago and the planet was 10 deg F hotter with sea levels 30 ft+ higher) and we still do not have a viable technology to remove GHG’s from the atmosphere which left to themselves will take between 100’s to 1000’s of years to come back down.
So, I would not be buying any beachfront property right now.
Also, everyday there are new articles about severe lingering drought in the Southwest US, reservoirs (Lake Mead, Lake Powell) at 36% full, Colorado river flows down >20%, growing population demand for water. Ever increasing fire seasons and permafrost warming accelerating potentially releasing 2x the CO2 in the atmosphere today (1200 ppm) and possible pathogens (anthrax).
Its going to be a bumpy ride ahead – Are ya feeling lucky? Maybe time to start thinking about how you, your children and grandchildren might weather the storm?
