Definition:
A Climate Change Doom Loop is a self-perpetuating cycle where the phsysical and economic damages of climate change force governments, cities and financial systems to constantly react to disasters, draining the money and resources needed to cut emissions or prepare for future risks.
This summer, Europe is experiencing excessive heat and drought due to climate change. Crop yields are 30-50% below average, livestock is suffering and clean power from nuclear energy is being shut down due to lack of cooling water. In addition, with only 20% of European households having air conditioning, demand for increased coverage will also require increases in power and potentially higher CO2 emissions, not to mention additional demand from data centers which are proliferating rapidily.
Despite renewable energy sourced power in high growth mode, this is only keeping up with population and socio-economic demand growth and not reducing the traditional CO2 and methane growth rates, not to mention any reduction in those emissions.
We are clearly entering the adaptation phase where business as usual can no longer be sustained. Hopefully humanity will wake up and take on the challenge to minimize emissions or we are at risk of a catastrophic future.
